Waterford Blow-Out Service Begins on the Supply Side

Before compressed air is connected to a Waterford sprinkler system, we need to know what normally supplies the water. A city-water installation with an irrigation shutoff and backflow assembly has a different supply-side layout than a dedicated pump system.

Why an Irrigation Shutoff That Drips Matters

Closing a city-water irrigation valve should stop water from feeding the sprinkler system. If that valve continues to seep, water may gradually move back toward the exterior mainline or backflow after compressed-air clearing.

That can partially undo the condition the blow-out was intended to create. A leaking shutoff should therefore be treated as a real system problem rather than an unrelated plumbing detail.

If we find that the supply cannot be isolated properly, we document it so the customer understands the limitation.

Backflow Assemblies Are Part of the Water Path

Backflow preventers sit between the building water supply and the irrigation system on many city-water installations. They also contain exposed plumbing that is more directly affected by cold weather than underground laterals.

A sprinkler blow-out should not focus exclusively on what comes out of the heads. The backflow, nearby fittings, mainline, and accessible drains or valves all have a role in the broader seasonal shutdown.

Pump-Fed Waterford Irrigation Has Different Seasonal Equipment

A pump-fed system can add a pump, relay, filter, discharge piping, check valves, drains, and other equipment that does not appear on a normal municipal-water setup. The exact configuration varies from property to property.

The zones are still cleared individually with compressed air where appropriate, but the pump-side equipment has to be considered on its own terms. A pump fault or damaged supply-side component can limit the normal winterization process.

We Watch the Zone Clear Instead of Chasing Maximum Pressure

Once the water supply is isolated and compressed air is introduced at the correct point, accessible stations are operated one at a time. Liquid water initially exits through the active sprinkler heads.

As air continues moving through the lateral piping, that visible discharge transitions toward mist. The purpose is to displace the majority of water from the accessible zone. It is not to expose valves and sprinkler heads to unnecessarily high pressure or prolonged dry air.

Air volume helps carry water through the piping. Pressure still needs to remain appropriate for irrigation components.

What If One Waterford Zone Will Not Run?

A station that fails to open may have an electrical problem, bad valve, controller issue, damaged wiring, stuck solenoid, or another field failure. Because compressed air follows the open hydraulic path, a zone that cannot activate may not clear normally.

We identify that limitation instead of skipping past it. The problem can then be repaired so the irrigation returns to service correctly in spring.

Before Your Waterford Blow-Out Appointment

• Keep the controller accessible.
• Make sure the irrigation shutoff or pump equipment can be reached.
• Provide access to the backflow and normal compressor connection.
• Unlock gates required to reach all active zones.
• Mention known leaking shutoffs, bad valves, pump problems, or non-operating stations.

If landscaping or construction changed the irrigation during the year, mention that as well. New beds, patios, fences, pool work, or controller replacement can change the system layout.

Why Supply-Side Problems Matter Even When Every Sprinkler Head Works

A sprinkler system can appear to operate normally during the watering season while still having a seasonal problem near the water source. A shutoff can seep only after being closed, a backflow fitting can retain water, or pump-side plumbing can contain low areas that are not obvious while the irrigation is operating normally.

That is why Hunter HydroTech does not judge a Waterford blow-out exclusively by what happens at the sprinkler heads. The field zones are important, but so is understanding how water entered the irrigation system before the compressor was connected.

When we identify a supply-side condition that could allow water back into cleared piping or leave an exposed component vulnerable, we document it so the underlying issue can be corrected instead of assuming additional compressor time will solve it.
