A residential sprinkler valve is both an electrical and hydraulic device. The irrigation controller provides the low-voltage signal, but the valve still depends on water pressure, clean internal passages, a functioning solenoid, an intact diaphragm, and correct plumbing.

How the controller circuit reaches the valve
One solenoid lead connects to the dedicated station wire for that valve. The second lead connects to the shared common wire. When the controller activates the station, low-voltage current travels to the solenoid through the station wire and returns through the common circuit.
If the station wire is cut, the common wire is broken, a waterproof connector has failed, or the controller output is defective, the valve may never receive the correct signal.
How the solenoid changes internal pressure
The solenoid does not directly lift the entire diaphragm. It opens a small internal pilot passage. That allows pressure above the diaphragm to be relieved faster than it is replaced.
The higher water pressure beneath the diaphragm then lifts it away from the valve seat.
How water reaches the sprinkler zone
Once the diaphragm lifts, pressurized mainline water moves through the valve body and out through the zone-line connection. The water then travels through the lateral pipe to the spray heads, rotors, or other irrigation devices on that zone.
How the valve closes
When the controller stops energizing the solenoid, the pilot passage closes. Pressure rebuilds above the diaphragm. The spring and water pressure push the diaphragm back against the valve seat, stopping water flow.
If dirt, sand, a small rock, or a damaged diaphragm prevents the sealing surfaces from meeting correctly, the valve may continue seeping or remain partly open.

Manual operation compared with electrical operation
A valve may be opened manually through the solenoid or manual bleed feature. If it runs manually but not from the timer, the hydraulic side may be working while the electrical circuit has failed.
If the correct electrical signal reaches the valve but the valve will not open or close, the solenoid or internal components may be damaged.
Why pressure and flow still matter
A functioning valve can appear defective when the mainline pressure is weak, a pump is not building pressure, a mainline is leaking, or the active zone contains excessive demand.
The valve should be evaluated as part of the complete irrigation system rather than in isolation.
Hunter HydroTech residential valve standard
Hunter HydroTech primarily installs 1-inch Hunter PGV globe-body, bolted, non-flow-control valves for residential systems. The preferred configuration uses a 1-inch male-threaded inlet and a 1-inch poly-barb outlet.

- Confirm the homeowner’s reported symptom.
- Inspect the controller programming and station output.
- Inspect the valve box, manifold, and wiring.
- Test manual valve operation.
- Activate the station from the controller.
- Measure voltage and electrical response where required.
- Check solenoid resistance and current draw where required.
- Inspect the valve body and fittings for leaks.
- Confirm the valve opens fully.
- Confirm the valve closes completely.
- Run the connected zone and inspect pressure and coverage.
Why diagnosis comes before replacement
Replacing a valve will not repair a cut wire or failed controller output. Replacing wiring will not repair a stuck diaphragm or cracked valve body. Proper diagnosis prevents replacing the wrong component and helps determine whether one valve, the complete valve, or the entire manifold should be rebuilt.
