Hunter HydroTech completed a verified Sterling Heights sprinkler revamp near the broad 18 Mile and Schoenherr area. The project included replacing seven Rain Bird Maxi-Paw impact rotors with Hunter PGP Ultra rotors, replacing a five-valve manifold, installing a Hunter HPC WiFi/Hydrawise controller, and replacing nine 4-inch spray heads.
Four different layers of the irrigation system were addressed in the same revamp: rotors, spray heads, valve infrastructure and controller operation. That is what made the project a revamp rather than a string of unrelated part swaps.
Why replace aging Maxi-Paw impact rotors?
Rain Bird Maxi-Paw impact rotors have been used on irrigation systems for years and can remain serviceable when they are in good condition. On this Sterling Heights property, seven aging Maxi-Paws were replaced with Hunter PGP Ultra rotors as part of the larger modernization.

Replacing seven rotors at once lets the zone be evaluated as a system
When several aging rotors are replaced together, we can compare their rise, rotation and throw under the same operating conditions. That makes it easier to see whether the zone is hydraulically balanced or whether a valve, piping restriction or excessive demand is still holding it back.
If one new rotor remains weak while the others perform correctly, the investigation becomes local. If the entire zone is weak, we move upstream toward the valve, piping and available water.
The five-valve manifold was a serviceability upgrade as well as a repair
The same project included replacement of a five-valve manifold. Valves are the control point between the common irrigation supply and the individual zones. A crowded, aging or difficult-to-service manifold can turn future diagnostics into unnecessary excavation and guesswork.
Replacing the manifold gives the system a cleaner point for testing solenoids, diaphragms, wiring and zone operation. It also allows the valve layout to be organized for future service rather than preserving a configuration simply because it has been underground for years.

Hunter HPC brought the controller side into the same modernization
A new smart controller does not fix bad valves or leaking piping, but it can make a repaired system easier to program and manage. This Sterling Heights revamp included installation of a Hunter HPC WiFi controller using the Hydrawise platform.
The important sequence is to make sure the field system works, then let the controller operate that field system reliably. A smart timer should not be used to hide a wiring problem, stuck valve or hydraulic failure.

Nine 4-inch sprays completed the shorter-range coverage work
Rotors and sprays serve different parts of a landscape. While the seven Maxi-Paws addressed longer-range rotor coverage, the project also included nine 4-inch spray heads for shorter-range areas.
Spray heads can become low, tilted, cracked or poorly matched to landscape changes. Replacing them during the same revamp allowed the system to be tested across both rotor and spray zones instead of leaving obvious aging components for another service call.
Why these repairs made sense as one project
A homeowner can replace rotors this month, a manifold next month and a controller later in the season. Sometimes that phased approach is the right choice. In this case, enough of the system needed attention that a coordinated revamp created a cleaner result.
The advantage is diagnostic clarity. Once the valve infrastructure, control side and worn heads are brought into dependable condition, any remaining problem is easier to isolate. The technician is no longer trying to decide whether a weak zone is caused by a failing rotor, old valve, controller issue or several of those problems at once.

The controller sends the command, the field wiring carries it, the solenoid responds and the valve opens. If any point in that chain fails, the zone may not run correctly. A new controller with old damaged field wiring can still have dead stations. A new manifold connected to a controller with bad output can still appear defective.
