How Multiple Irrigation Valves Distribute Water to Separate Sprinkler Zones

A sprinkler valve manifold is a group of irrigation valves supplied by one mainline. Each valve controls a separate zone and sends water into its own zone line.

Hunter HydroTech commonly builds residential manifolds with polyethylene pipe and 1-inch barb-by-female-threaded manifold tees and elbows. Spears fittings are commonly used.

How many valves fit in a box?

  • 6-inch round box: usually 1 to 2 valves
  • Regular 12-inch box: usually 3 to 4 valves
  • Jumbo 14-inch box: may hold about 5 valves

When multiple boxes are better

Systems with 8, 9, or 10 valves should generally be split into two or even three boxes for serviceability, wiring access, and cleaner plumbing.

Why space matters

Valves need enough room for solenoid replacement, top removal, wire access, leak inspection, and future service.
