Why blowing out only the sprinkler heads is not enough

When a sprinkler zone is activated during winterization, compressed air helps move water through the lateral piping and out through the sprinkler heads. That is important, but the visible heads are only the end of the system.

Water can also remain around valves, manifolds, mainline sections and exposed plumbing. Pump-fed systems can have additional low points or equipment that must be accounted for separately. Professional winterization is therefore a system shutdown procedure, not simply a test to see whether air comes out of each sprinkler head.

Controlled air matters

Irrigation components were designed to carry water, not unlimited compressed air. Winterization should use controlled air delivery and an appropriate connection point while zones are operated in a deliberate sequence.
