Why irrigation system age matters during winterization
Two sprinkler systems can serve similar properties and still be built very differently. Older irrigation systems may contain plumbing, shutoffs, valve arrangements or repair modifications that are different from a newer installation.
That is why professional sprinkler winterization should begin with the system that is actually present rather than assuming every property has the same connection point and shutdown procedure.
Identify the irrigation supply before blowing out the system
For city-water irrigation, the sprinkler supply normally branches from the building plumbing before reaching the outdoor irrigation equipment. The shutoff should be identified correctly so the irrigation system can be isolated without disturbing unrelated plumbing.
Older systems may have been repaired or modified over time, making it especially useful to understand where the irrigation supply enters the system and how the outdoor components are arranged.
Backflow prevention and exposed plumbing
Backflow prevention equipment is one of the most visible portions of many city-water irrigation systems. It may also be one of the portions most directly exposed to freezing temperatures.
Water trapped inside a backflow body, shutoff, test cock or nearby fitting can expand as it freezes. A complete seasonal shutdown therefore needs to consider the backflow assembly along with the underground sprinkler piping.
Older valve and manifold layouts
Irrigation valves may be grouped together in a manifold or distributed in multiple locations across a property. Older properties can also have valve boxes that are buried deeper, concealed by landscaping or located far from the controller.
During winterization, the important point is that each functional zone is activated and cleared individually. A system with unusual valve placement should not be treated as though all zones share one simple piping run.
Mixed sprinkler heads and renovated landscapes
Over many years, irrigation systems may receive replacement heads, relocated zones, landscape changes and repairs. A property may contain rotors, sprays and other irrigation components installed at different times.
These differences can change how water and air move through the system. Watching each zone during the blowout is useful because it confirms that the zone is activating and helps identify unusual behavior before the system is left dormant for winter.
What a professional winterization should accomplish
The goal is to reduce water remaining in vulnerable irrigation components while shutting the system down in an organized way. That generally includes isolating the water source, connecting controlled compressed-air equipment, operating the zones and observing the sprinkler system as water is displaced.
Professional winterization is not a guarantee that an already-damaged component will survive the winter. Existing cracks, leaks or failed valves should be documented or repaired separately.
Do not wait for a hard freeze to discover a problem
Scheduling before sustained freezing weather is important because winterization is preventative. Once trapped water has frozen and damaged a fitting or backflow assembly, blowing out the rest of the sprinkler system cannot reverse that damage.
Earlier fall scheduling can also make it easier to address an irrigation shutoff or valve problem that prevents a normal winterization procedure.
