Removable drain caps are left off when appropriate until spring start-up. The purpose is to avoid sealing water inside exposed hardware that will see the coldest temperatures.
We also look for continued water movement after the zone discharge stops. If the backflow keeps dripping or begins to refill, the interior irrigation shutoff may not be closing completely. That is a condition worth documenting now because winterization cannot protect exterior plumbing if the building continues feeding it all winter.
Pump-fed Macomb systems add pump draining and intake work
Macomb Township also has pump-fed irrigation, even though most of the systems represented in our current notes are city water. For a pump-fed system, the air connection is normally at the pump hose bib or dedicated winterization port. We clear the zones and mainline, drain the pump from the bottom drain or bleeder, and empty any seasonal intake that can hold water through winter.
Outdoor pump drains are one area where serviceability matters. Exposed pumps age, hardware rusts, and a drain plug that was easy to remove when the pump was new can become difficult later. We prefer serviceable bleeders or test-cock style drain points where practical because they make a yearly maintenance task easier and reduce the temptation to leave water in the pump because a plug is seized.

After a blowout, it can be a winterization problem because the slow seep has hours or days to refill an exposed backflow or section of mainline. That is why the final no-refill check matters. The seasonal service is strongest when the system remains isolated after we leave, not merely when it looks dry for five minutes.
