Older irrigation changes what we pay attention to during a Royal Oak winterization
Royal Oak has many established irrigation systems that have been repaired and modified over time. Winterization is still based on the same physical goal—remove water before freezing weather—but older field equipment makes a careful station-by-station shutdown especially useful.

Royal Oak city-water systems begin with the irrigation shutoff
The irrigation supply is turned off at the appropriate indoor or source-side shutoff before compressed air is introduced. The shutoff has to do more than turn a handle; it has to stop water from entering the exterior irrigation system. We pay attention to continued dripping or refilling after the blowout because a worn or damaged shutoff can slowly put water back into a mainline or backflow assembly that was just cleared.
With the supply isolated, compressed air is connected to the proper blowout point and the controller is used to open one station at a time. A healthy zone normally starts by pushing visible water from sprays or rotors. As the lateral clears, that output becomes a dense mist. The mist then thins as less water remains. We continue until the mist is nearly gone and then move on. There is no benefit to leaving an older rotor spinning dry for a long period after the piping is effectively clear, so thoroughness comes from working through every station—not from excessive run time on one station.
That is especially sensible on systems with decades of mixed hardware. A Royal Oak yard may have older heads in one area and newer replacements in another. Winterization is not the time to stress-test every gear drive. It is the time to remove water, observe whether each station operates, and leave the system ready for winter.
Mature roots and older repairs can create hidden system history
Royal Oak irrigation work often intersects with mature landscaping. Roots can restrict piping, alter head positions, crowd valve boxes, and contribute to past repairs. A system that has been repaired multiple times may also have capped lines, rerouted laterals, or a station that no longer matches the controller label. After the active zones and common irrigation main are cleared, the backflow assembly is drained. Ball valves and bleeders or test cocks are left in an appropriate seasonal position, commonly around 45 degrees, and removable drain caps are left off when appropriate until spring start-up. This prevents water from being intentionally trapped inside exposed hardware after the underground piping has already been cleared.
If the backflow keeps receiving fresh water after the inside irrigation shutoff is closed, that condition should be addressed. A passing shutoff can refill the very component most exposed to winter temperatures.

If a Royal Oak property is pump-fed, the supply-side steps change
A pump-fed winterization still requires every active zone and the mainline to be cleared, but the pump itself must also be drained. Hunter HydroTech typically connects at the pump hose bib or designated winterization point, clears the system, drains the pump from its lower drain or bleeder, and empties any seasonal intake that can retain water. The controller is turned off and the pump or master-valve wire is disconnected as appropriate so a dry pump cannot be started accidentally.
Winterization can create a useful spring repair list
A station that does not open, a leaking shutoff, a damaged spray, or a rotor that behaves abnormally during the blowout is worth documenting. That does not mean every winterization becomes a repair appointment. It means the final operation of the system for the year can give the homeowner a short list of things to address when spring start-up arrives.

A Royal Oak system may have several generations of sprinkler heads because individual rotors and sprays were replaced as they failed. Older Rain Bird, K-Rain, Toro or Orbit equipment can exist next to newer Hunter replacements. Those heads do not always rise, rotate or seal exactly the same way under air. We watch what the station is doing rather than expecting every head to look identical during the blowout. The objective is to move water out of the piping while avoiding unnecessary abuse of hardware that may already have years of service behind it.

Roots that have lifted or pinched irrigation piping during the growing season do not necessarily create a different winterization procedure, but they can explain unusual zone behavior. A restricted lateral may discharge differently from the rest of the system, and a repaired root area may contain newer fittings or rerouted pipe.
