Winterization has to address the irrigation piping and the source-side equipment that is exposed to freezing weather.

Where the intake is designed for seasonal removal, we remove it from the lake or pond and empty the water from the intake components so they are not left full through winter.
Why serviceable pump drains matter year after year
Outdoor pumps live in weather. Drain plugs and fittings can corrode, rust and become harder to service as the system ages. When practical, Hunter HydroTech prefers accessible bleeders or test-cock style drain points that can be opened each fall without fighting a seized plug. Winterization is a yearly task, so the pump should be built and repaired with future seasonal service in mind.
Controller and pump wiring are part of the winter shutdown
After a pump-fed system is emptied, the controller is turned off and the pump or master-valve control wire is disconnected as appropriate. This is an important protection against accidental dry operation. A forgotten schedule or someone pressing a manual-start command should not be able to energize a pump that has been intentionally drained for winter.

What to tell us about a retention-pond system
When booking, tell us that the irrigation uses a retention pond rather than simply saying “pump system” if you know that detail. Mention whether the intake is removable, whether the pump sits outside, whether there is a dedicated winterization port, and whether any drain plugs have been difficult in previous years. Those details help us arrive ready for the system instead of discovering a unique shoreline or pump setup after the route is already scheduled tightly.
Why pump-fed pricing is different from city-water pricing
A city-water blowout can usually be completed by isolating the irrigation supply, clearing the zones and mainline, draining the backflow and shutting down the controller. A pump-fed system adds the pump body, drain points, intake or suction-side equipment and pump-control circuit. Those extra steps are why pump seasonal service is priced separately. The customer is not paying for a different word on the invoice; the technician is handling additional equipment that can hold water and be damaged by freezing.
Spring start-up should reverse the winter shutdown carefully
When spring arrives, a pump-fed system should not simply have the controller switched back on. The intake must be returned to service if it was removed, the pump may need priming, drain points must be closed, the control wire must be restored and the irrigation system should be tested under water pressure. City-water systems also need the backflow and shutoff returned to normal operating positions. A careful winterization creates a clear path for that spring restart instead of leaving mystery valves and disconnected equipment with no explanation.
