When and How to Winterize a Sprinkler System in Sterling Heights, Michigan

Michigan irrigation systems spend several months exposed to freezing conditions while they are not being used. Water trapped inside sprinkler piping, valves, fittings, backflow assemblies and exposed plumbing can expand when it freezes and damage irrigation components.

When should a sprinkler system be winterized?

Winterization should be scheduled before extended freezing weather, not after a sprinkler system has already frozen. Fall weather in Southeast Michigan can change quickly, and the first serious cold stretch may arrive before a homeowner expects it.

Scheduling ahead also provides more appointment flexibility and gives time to address a valve, shutoff or plumbing issue discovered during the winterization process.

Turning off the controller is not winterization

The irrigation controller only sends electrical commands to the sprinkler valves. Turning the controller off stops scheduled watering, but it does not remove water from underground irrigation piping.

The irrigation water source must also be isolated and the zones need to be cleared appropriately.

City-water systems and irrigation shutoffs

Many residential sprinkler systems use a dedicated irrigation connection from the building water supply. A shutoff isolates the sprinkler system from the rest of the plumbing.

The correct shutoff should be identified before compressed-air winterization begins. Once isolated, the system can be cleared without continuously feeding additional water into the irrigation main.

Backflow assemblies can freeze

Above-ground backflow equipment and nearby plumbing are exposed to outside temperatures. Water trapped in these components can freeze more quickly than water in deeper underground irrigation pipe.

A professional winterization should therefore consider the backflow and exposed plumbing rather than focusing only on the sprinkler heads.

Every sprinkler zone is a separate pipe network

A controller may operate six, eight, ten or many more irrigation zones. Each zone contains its own lateral piping and sprinkler heads.

During the blowout, the zones are operated individually so air can move water out through the sprinkler heads. Clearing one zone does not mean every other zone has automatically been cleared.

Rotors, sprays and drip zones

Residential irrigation systems may contain several types of watering equipment. Large lawn areas often use rotors, smaller areas may use spray heads, and landscape beds may contain drip irrigation.

Different zones can respond differently during winterization. The technician should observe each zone instead of assuming every portion of the system is behaving normally.

What can be discovered during winterization?

Winterization is primarily seasonal protection, but operating every zone can reveal irrigation problems that should be noted for spring. A zone that fails to activate, a damaged head, a leaking valve or unusual system behavior may become apparent during the shutdown.

Not every problem needs to be repaired during the fall appointment, but documenting it can make spring start-up more organized.

What happens after the blowout?

The irrigation system should be left in an appropriate off-season state. Watering schedules should not continue attempting to run winterized zones, and any pump or special equipment should be handled according to its installation.

When spring returns, the system should be activated carefully rather than simply opening the water supply at full flow.
