Backflow assemblies are especially vulnerable

Winterization should account for the backflow assembly and the plumbing surrounding it. Merely turning off the controller does nothing to remove water from that equipment.

If an existing backflow is already cracked, leaking or damaged, winterization is not a repair. The defect should be evaluated separately.

The valve manifold still contains water

Underground irrigation valves control the individual zones throughout the property. Even after the incoming water supply is shut off, the manifold and zone piping can hold water.

During a professional blowout, each zone is operated so compressed air can move water through the lateral piping and out through the sprinkler heads. Watching how each zone behaves can also reveal problems such as stuck valves, heads that do not rise properly or zones that fail to activate.

Why every zone should be handled individually

A multi-zone sprinkler system contains separate lengths of underground pipe. Clearing one zone does not automatically clear every other zone.

Rotors, spray heads and drip irrigation may also respond differently. A deliberate zone-by-zone process helps ensure that the complete system is addressed instead of rushing air through whichever heads happen to be closest to the compressor connection.

Sprinkler blowout does not mean unlimited air pressure

Compressed air must be used carefully. Irrigation piping, valves, backflow components and sprinkler heads can be damaged by improper connections or careless air delivery.

The goal is controlled evacuation of irrigation water, not maximum pressure. Professional equipment and knowledge of the irrigation layout help make that process more consistent.
