A successful winterization is much easier when the technician can quickly identify the irrigation shutoff, backflow, controller and blowout connection. Backflow and exposed plumbing still hold water after the lawn looks dry
The backflow assembly, unions, valves, test cocks, risers and short exposed pipe sections can retain water even after the underground laterals have been cleared. We drain the backflow and leave the appropriate ball valves and bleeders in a winter position, often around 45 degrees. Removable drain caps are left off where appropriate so the assembly is not sealed with trapped water inside.

What changes if an Utica system is pump-fed
Pump-fed irrigation adds the pump to the seasonal checklist. Air is connected at the pump hose bib or dedicated winterization point when the installation is configured for it. The zones and mainline are cleared, then the pump is drained from a lower drain, bleeder or serviceable port. If a seasonal lake or pond intake is present, the intake is emptied so water is not left inside exposed or removable source-side components.
After the pump is drained, the controller is turned off and the pump or master-valve control wire is disconnected as appropriate. That protects against an automatic program accidentally starting an empty pump during winter.
A complete winterization ends with a final no-refill check
Before the appointment is closed out, we want to know that the system is not immediately refilling itself. We look at the backflow or pump-side plumbing, confirm the controller is off, and note any water source or valve issue that could put water back into the system. This is also the point where obvious damage, a non-opening station or a shutoff problem can be documented for spring.

In spring, that note gives the technician a starting point. Without it, the first start-up may turn into a rediscovery process.
