Why a Copper-to-Plastic Threaded Transition Failed on a Bloomfield Hills Irrigation Backflow Downleg

Hunter HydroTech completed an irrigation backflow repair in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan after a leak developed on the downleg below the backflow assembly. The failure was not caused by a sprinkler head, buried lateral line, or controller issue. It occurred at a transition fitting in the exposed plumbing.

The existing downleg changed from copper to the underground polyethylene irrigation piping by using a copper female-threaded adapter with a plastic male-threaded fitting screwed into it. The plastic fitting cracked at the male threads. Once that threaded section fractured, the connection could no longer remain watertight.

Where the backflow downleg fitting failed

When the layout allows it, Hunter HydroTech prefers to carry copper down the exposed portion of the assembly and transition the polyethylene irrigation line directly onto a copper barbed fitting. In the field we commonly refer to this copper barbed transition as a Yaboo fitting.

This approach can eliminate a separate copper-female-to-plastic-male threaded transition. The polyethylene pipe is secured directly to the copper barb, reducing the number of threaded points in the downleg.

The correct repair still depends on the existing assembly, pipe sizing, backflow configuration, accessibility, and condition of the surrounding plumbing. A technician should inspect the complete connection rather than replacing only the visibly cracked piece without understanding what loaded the fitting.
