A Fraser City-Water Sprinkler System With Older Backflow Protection Was Modernized With a Serviceable 1-Inch Pressure Vacuum Breaker

Older irrigation systems can continue working for decades while individual parts are repaired or replaced one at a time. That is common in the Fraser sprinkler systems Hunter HydroTech services. Many of the properties represented in our current Fraser field notes are established city-water irrigation systems in mature, root-heavy yards, and the plumbing that supplies those systems can reflect an earlier installation era.

One recurring example is older irrigation backflow protection. Hunter HydroTech has encountered Fraser systems using atmospheric vacuum breaker arrangements and has replaced aging protection with a serviceable 1-inch Wilkins 710 pressure vacuum breaker where that assembly fits the actual property and plumbing layout.

Why the backflow assembly should be evaluated with the rest of the sprinkler system

A backflow or vacuum-breaker device is part of the irrigation water supply. It connects the building or exterior plumbing to the sprinkler mainline, and the condition of the surrounding shutoffs, fittings, copper or other piping, and downstream irrigation system can all affect the repair.

That is why Hunter HydroTech does not approach an older Fraser backflow as a stand-alone part that can be swapped without looking at what is connected to it. Before recommending a replacement, we identify the existing device, check how the irrigation is shut off, inspect the exposed plumbing and transitions, and understand how the downstream system is arranged.

Older AVB-style irrigation protection in Fraser

Atmospheric vacuum breakers, commonly shortened to AVBs, are found on some older irrigation systems we service. The exact age, arrangement, and installation style vary from property to property, so an older Fraser system should be evaluated as it actually exists rather than assumed to match another home a few streets away.

On systems where the older protection is aging, leaking, difficult to service, or no longer the preferred arrangement for the property, Hunter HydroTech may recommend replacing that weak point with a more serviceable pressure vacuum breaker assembly.

Using a 1-inch Wilkins 710 PVB

One assembly Hunter HydroTech uses in this type of irrigation work is the 1-inch Wilkins 710 PVB. The goal is not simply to install a newer device. The goal is to create a clean, serviceable irrigation supply arrangement that can be shut off, inspected, maintained, winterized, and connected properly to the sprinkler system downstream.

Because existing plumbing differs between homes, the exact copper, fittings, transitions, valve placement, and support requirements are determined from the property rather than copied from a generic diagram.

Mature Fraser yards can make older irrigation repairs more involved

Our Fraser field notes also include mature, root-heavy yards. Roots can grow around valve boxes, laterals, fittings, sprinkler heads, and older buried piping. That does not mean every Fraser property has the same root conditions, but it is a real factor on many of the established systems Hunter HydroTech has serviced.

When backflow work is combined with downstream troubleshooting, mature landscaping may affect how easily buried irrigation components can be accessed. A supply-side repair should therefore be followed by operating the system and checking what happens when the zones are pressurized again.

What we check after backflow work

Once the irrigation supply is restored, the job is not finished simply because the new assembly holds water. Hunter HydroTech may operate the sprinkler system to check:

• whether the mainline pressurizes normally;
• whether valves open and close correctly;
• whether any downstream leaks appear under pressure;
• whether zones have normal operating pressure;
• whether heads and nozzles are functioning as expected; and
• whether older fittings or repaired sections reveal a second problem once water is restored.

This matters on an established system because multiple generations of repairs may exist downstream from the backflow.

Backflow modernization is different from rebuilding the entire irrigation system

An older backflow arrangement does not automatically mean the entire sprinkler system needs to be replaced. Many established irrigation systems can continue to be repaired and maintained when the buried piping, valves, wiring, and coverage remain serviceable.

The better question is whether the existing backflow assembly and surrounding plumbing remain dependable and serviceable. Hunter HydroTech evaluates that section of the system on its own merits while also checking how it interacts with the rest of the irrigation.
