A weak sprinkler zone on a pump-fed irrigation system can look simple from the lawn. A few rotors may not rise fully, spray distance may fall short, or one zone may appear to have “bad pressure.” On a larger pump system, however, the visible sprinkler heads are only the end of a much longer hydraulic and electrical path.

A pump can only move the water that reaches it. Air entering the suction side, a restriction at the source, a foot-valve or check-valve problem, debris, or a poor connection can reduce performance before water ever reaches the discharge side.
That is why we do not automatically recommend pump replacement because the sprinklers are weak. A pump that cannot stay primed needs a different diagnosis from a pump that primes normally but loses pressure only when a particular zone opens.

Large mains change how we think about flow and zone demand
Our Harrison Township field history includes irrigation layouts with 2-inch and 1.5-inch mains feeding 1.25-inch and 1-inch zone piping. Those dimensions matter because a larger system may be designed to move considerably more water than a typical small residential layout.

Rotor demand and zone layout have to match available water
Hunter HydroTech evaluates the actual sprinklers on the zone rather than using a city name as a design shortcut. Rotor zones, spray zones and mixed layouts place different demands on the system. Nozzle selection, head count, elevation, pipe size and valve condition can all change performance.
If a pump system has strong pressure with a small zone but falls off sharply on a larger rotor zone, that comparison is useful evidence. It may indicate excessive zone demand, a restriction that becomes more obvious at higher flow, or source-side performance that is adequate only at lower demand.

Hunter Pro-C and HPC/Hydrawise controls add an electrical side to pump troubleshooting

A controller can appear to run a station while the pump does not receive the correct command. A relay can fail. Field wiring can be damaged. A valve can fail to open even though the pump starts. These are different problems, and changing the controller would not solve all of them.

How we separate pump trouble from valve or zone trouble
One of the most useful diagnostic comparisons is how the system behaves across multiple stations. If the pump starts consistently and several zones operate normally while one zone remains weak, we focus more closely on that zone’s valve, piping, fittings, sprinkler demand and possible leak.
If multiple zones lose pressure together, if prime is inconsistent, or if pump behavior changes before any individual valve becomes the obvious problem, the source and pump side deserve more attention.
This process keeps us from replacing an expensive pump when the actual failure is downstream—and from rebuilding a valve box when the system cannot get dependable water to the pump in the first place.
Seasonal start-up is a good time to catch pump-system problems early
Spring start-up gives us an opportunity to watch the system establish water supply, test controller output, operate the zones and identify leaks or weak performance before the landscape is relying on regular irrigation. When does a pump need replacement?
Pump replacement makes sense when testing shows the pump itself is failed, badly worn, electrically compromised, unable to produce the required performance, or no longer a practical repair candidate. It does not make sense merely because one zone is weak.
We compare the pump with the intake, suction path, relay/control operation, discharge, mainline, valves and actual zone demand. That broader diagnosis is especially important on larger Harrison Township systems where several pipe sizes and many zones may interact.
When is a larger irrigation revamp the better option?
