Converting an Older Impact-Style Maxi-Paw to a Hunter PGP Ultra

Older Maxi-Paw impact heads are still found in many residential systems. Hunter HydroTech often converts them to modern gear-driven rotors such as the Hunter PGP Ultra.

Why replace a Maxi-Paw?

• Loud impact noise
• Rapid jerking movement
• Older impact-style watering
• Less controlled and less even operation
• Old cups, nipples, nylon fittings, or damaged underground connections

Inspect the old connection

Older heads may be attached to a rigid nipple, male-threaded elbow, tee, or white nylon fitting. A sound female fitting may be reused. A cracked or poorly positioned connection may need a new CRE or CRT with an Oetiker stainless crimp clamp.

Build the new connection

Install a 050 elbow at the CRE or CRT, 8 to 14 inches of swing pipe, and a 075 elbow at the rotor. Flush the open line outside the hole before installing the rotor.

Install and adjust

Set the modern rotor level with the soil, choose the correct nozzle, adjust arc and distance, and test the full zone for head-to-head coverage.

General pricing

A residential rotor replacement is generally around $70. A rotor with a new swing assembly, CRE or CRT connection, or Maxi-Paw conversion is generally around $100, subject to site conditions.
