Clogged Nozzles, Low Pressure, Broken Lines, Valve Problems, and Internal Spray-Body Failures

Learn why one or more spray heads may fail to rise and how to separate a clogged nozzle from a pressure, valve, or pipe problem.

A spray head that does not rise may have a problem inside the head itself, but it may also be trapped beneath grass, buried by soil buildup, blocked by debris, or affected by a pressure problem elsewhere in the zone.

Spray heads operate at a lower flow rate than most residential rotors. Because they produce less upward force when a zone starts, a spray riser may remain trapped beneath thick grass, thatch, soil, mulch, or overgrown roots. A rotor will often push through light grass growth, while a smaller spray head may stay buried and appear as though it is not working at all.

A spray head may be buried or trapped beneath grass

One of the most common reasons a residential spray head does not pop up is that the system has not been used for an extended period and the head has become covered by grass, soil, thatch, or mulch.

This often happens during the winter, after landscaping work, or when the lawn grows heavily around a head that has not operated for several months.

Spray heads have a lower flow rate than most rotors. That means the riser may not have enough upward force to push through compacted grass or soil. A rotor may still rise through light overgrowth, while a smaller spray body remains trapped beneath it.

Signs that a spray head is buried

  • Water bubbles from beneath the grass
  • The lawn becomes wet in one small area, but no head is visible
  • The spray pattern from nearby heads suggests another head should be present
  • A small amount of water appears through the soil when the zone runs
  • The head rises only after the grass is pulled away manually

The area around the head should be carefully cleared so the riser can move freely. The body should remain level with the finished soil and should not be left unnecessarily high where a mower or edger can strike it.

A clogged nozzle can prevent normal spray-head operation

Dirt, sand, small stones, grass clippings, and pipe debris can clog the nozzle or filter screen. A partially clogged nozzle may produce a weak or uneven spray. A severe clog may prevent enough water from leaving the head for the riser to extend normally.

Common symptoms include:

  • Very short spray distance
  • An uneven or distorted fan pattern
  • Water dribbling from the nozzle
  • The riser lifting only partway
  • One weak head while the rest of the zone operates normally

The nozzle and filter screen may need to be removed, cleaned, and flushed. The open spray body should also be flushed before reinstalling the nozzle so remaining debris is not pushed directly back into it.

Dirt or sand may be inside the spray body

Debris can collect inside the spray body around the riser, spring, and seal. This may prevent the stem from moving freely or cause it to remain stuck in the lowered position.

Dirt commonly enters a spray head after:

  • A zone-line break
  • A head replacement
  • An open pipe being left in the excavation
  • A mainline or manifold repair
  • Soil being washed into a damaged head

Hunter HydroTech prefers to flush irrigation lines during repairs before installing the final head. This reduces the chance of dirt damaging a new nozzle, seal, or internal spring.

Low pressure may prevent several spray heads from rising

If several spray heads on the same zone are weak or remain down, the problem is probably larger than one clogged nozzle.

Possible causes of low pressure include:

  • A broken zone line
  • A leaking fitting
  • A valve that is not opening completely
  • A partially blocked valve
  • Too many heads on the zone
  • Oversized nozzles creating excessive demand
  • A mainline restriction
  • Low city-water pressure
  • A pump system that is not building proper pressure

When several heads are affected, replacing individual spray bodies may not solve the problem. The entire zone should be inspected for pressure loss and excessive demand.

A partially opening valve can make spray heads appear defective

A valve that does not open fully may allow some water into the zone without providing enough pressure to lift every spray riser.

This may be caused by:

  • A weak or damaged solenoid
  • Dirt inside the valve
  • A damaged diaphragm
  • A restricted internal passage
  • Incorrect voltage reaching the solenoid
  • A field-wiring or controller problem

If the zone operates more strongly when the valve is opened manually than when it is activated from the controller, the electrical circuit, solenoid, wiring, or controller output should be checked.

A broken zone line may reduce pressure throughout the zone

An underground pipe break can release enough water that spray heads will not rise normally. The leak may be obvious, or it may remain hidden beneath the lawn.

Signs of a zone-line leak include:

  • Several heads operating weakly
  • A wet or soft area in the lawn
  • Water bubbling from the ground
  • One section of the zone receiving little or no pressure
  • The zone taking longer than normal to build pressure

The pipe and fittings should be inspected before assuming that multiple spray heads failed at the same time.

Too many heads or excessive nozzle demand can overload a zone

Every nozzle uses a certain amount of water. If the total nozzle demand exceeds the available gallons per minute, the zone pressure drops.

This can happen when:

  • Additional heads were added without measuring available flow
  • Larger nozzles replaced smaller nozzles
  • Adjustable VAN nozzles were opened wider
  • The original system was poorly designed
  • A smaller pipe or restrictive fitting limits flow

Opening an adjustable nozzle changes more than the visible spray arc. It can also change flow, coverage, and the total water demand on the zone.

The internal spring or seal may be worn

Spray bodies contain an internal spring that retracts the riser after the zone shuts down. Age, dirt, sand, and repeated use can weaken or restrict this mechanism.

A worn spray body may:

  • Fail to rise
  • Rise only partway
  • Stay stuck up after shutdown
  • Leak around the riser seal
  • Operate only after being pulled up manually

If cleaning and flushing do not restore dependable operation, replacing the spray body is usually the better repair.

How Hunter HydroTech diagnoses a spray head that will not pop up

  1. Run the affected zone and observe all of the heads.
  2. Determine whether one head or the entire zone is weak.
  3. Look for water bubbling beneath grass where a buried head may be located.
  4. Clear grass, soil, and thatch from around the spray body.
  5. Inspect the nozzle and filter screen for debris.
  6. Check whether the riser moves freely.
  7. Inspect the area for underground pipe leaks.
  8. Test the valve manually and from the controller when needed.
  9. Evaluate zone pressure and nozzle demand.
  10. Flush the line before installing a replacement head.
  11. Set the replacement body level with the soil.
  12. Confirm proper spacing, spray pattern, and head-to-head coverage.

Why sprinkler start-ups include cleaning around spray heads

Spray heads are especially likely to become buried during periods when the irrigation system is not being used. Grass can grow over the cap, soil can settle around the body, and thatch can prevent the riser from extending.

When should the spray head be replaced?

Replacement may be appropriate when:

  • The body is cracked
  • The riser remains stuck after cleaning
  • The internal spring is worn
  • The seal leaks heavily
  • The nozzle threads are damaged
  • The head was struck by an edger or mower
  • The body is installed on a cracked rigid nipple
