A sprinkler head that will not rise, a zone that runs weakly or water bubbling from the soil can all point to an underground failure. On an established irrigation system, the problem is not always the sprinkler head itself. Older valves and buried fittings can fail in ways that create symptoms several feet away from the actual break.
Hunter HydroTech’s verified Rochester Hills irrigation field history includes older Rain Bird, Orbit and Richdel valves, leaking blue spiral-style fittings, older white nylon fittings and brittle elbows or tees used around legacy rotor installations such as Maxi-Paws. It is common for a controller to be newer than the valves, fittings and wiring it operates. A WiFi timer can be functioning perfectly while an underground valve from an earlier generation is sticking or a brittle fitting beneath a rotor is leaking.
That is why a newer controller does not rule out an older field-system failure.
Older Rain Bird, Orbit and Richdel valves can fail in different ways
Our Rochester Hills field experience includes older Rain Bird, Orbit and Richdel valves. Valve symptoms have included stuck-closed operation, stuck-open operation and failed solenoids.
Those symptoms do not all have the same repair. A failed solenoid is an electrical actuator problem. A valve that cannot reseat may have an internal diaphragm, debris or body problem. A valve that does not open may require testing at the controller, field wiring and solenoid before the internal hydraulic components are blamed.

Why one bad fitting can make a sprinkler head look defective
Older sprinkler systems often use several buried fittings between the lateral pipe and the head. If one of those connections splits, loosens or pulls away, water escapes below grade before it reaches the sprinkler nozzle.
The result may be a head that barely rises, weak spray distance, an unusually wet area around the head or a zone that seems to have inconsistent pressure. Replacing the visible sprinkler body without inspecting the connection underneath can leave the real leak untouched.
Blue spiral-style fittings and older white nylon connections
Hunter HydroTech has repaired leaking blue spiral-style fittings and older white nylon fittings in Rochester Hills. These are examples from systems actually serviced; they are not a claim that every older property uses the same components.
As buried plastic ages, serviceability matters. A fitting that has become brittle may crack when disturbed. A barb connection may loosen. An elbow or tee that supported an older rotor may fail under soil movement, root pressure or normal long-term stress.
When one legacy fitting fails, we inspect the material immediately around it before deciding how much should be rebuilt.
Legacy Maxi-Paw connections deserve inspection below the rotor
Our Rochester Hills field notes include older white nylon fittings associated with legacy Maxi-Paw installations. On that type of older assembly, a brittle elbow or tee can snap or loosen below the surface.
A customer may see only a rotor that will not perform correctly. Excavating carefully around the head can reveal that the rotor itself is not the main failure. Rebuilding the connection beneath the head restores the hydraulic path and gives the replacement or existing head a solid base.
Mature roots can make older failures harder to expose
The soil on Rochester Hills properties we have serviced is generally workable, but mature trees can create significant root conditions. Roots do not automatically mean the irrigation has been damaged, but they can crowd valve boxes, wrap around fittings and make a clean excavation more difficult.
Careful digging is especially important when an older fitting may already be brittle. Aggressive excavation can turn a small leak into a larger repair if nearby legacy components are disturbed unnecessarily.
Organized testing matters on 7–14 zone systems
Larger residential systems can make troubleshooting confusing because several zones may have different ages, head types and repair histories. Hunter HydroTech compares station behavior rather than treating one weak zone as evidence that the entire water supply is failing.
If seven zones operate normally and one does not, the problem is more likely to be local to that station. If every zone is weak, the investigation shifts toward the water supply, backflow, mainline or another system-wide restriction.
Leak detection should follow the hydraulic symptom
Some underground fitting failures create obvious surface water. Others disappear into porous soil and are noticed mainly because pressure has fallen. Operating the zone and following the hydraulic response helps narrow the excavation area.

When should an older valve or fitting be replaced instead of repaired?
The answer depends on the condition of the surrounding assembly. A serviceable valve body with one failed component may be a good repair candidate. If the body, fittings, wiring and adjacent components are all aging, replacing a larger section can create a more dependable result.
The same applies to buried fittings. One isolated failed elbow does not mean the entire lateral needs replacement, but repeated brittle fittings in the same section may justify rebuilding that part of the system with more serviceable materials.
