A sprinkler zone that will not run is not automatically a bad valve. A zone that will not shut off is not automatically a controller problem. When several zones act strangely at the same time, the failure may be electrical, mechanical, hydraulic or a combination of more than one problem.

A controller upgrade should include station verification
Replacing an old timer is a good opportunity to document what each station actually operates. On established systems, labels may be wrong, previous repairs may have changed wiring, unused conductors may remain in the cable, and zones may have been added or combined over time.
