Why Hunter HydroTech Installs Flexible Swing Assemblies Instead of Rigid Sprinkler Nipples

Sprinkler heads are sometimes threaded directly onto rigid PVC or nylon nipples. That method can work temporarily, but Hunter HydroTech prefers to install residential spray heads and rotors on flexible swing assemblies whenever practical.

A swing assembly uses flexible swing pipe between two elbows. The assembly allows the sprinkler head to move slightly without forcing the underground fitting to absorb every impact, shift, or height adjustment.

Problems commonly seen with rigid nipples

A rigid nipple creates a direct, fixed connection between the head and the underground fitting. Problems can develop when:

• A lawn mower wheel pushes the sprinkler head sideways
• An aerator or landscape tool strikes the head
• A vehicle or heavy equipment crosses the area
• Soil settles and leaves the head leaning
• The turf layer grows above the original installation height
• An older nylon nipple becomes brittle
• The nipple cracks inside the underground female fitting

When the nipple breaks, part of it may remain threaded inside the CRE or CRT. A nipple extractor may remove it, but damaged threads or a split underground fitting can require a larger excavation and fitting replacement.

How a flexible swing assembly helps

A swing assembly does not make a sprinkler head indestructible, but it provides controlled movement and makes future adjustments easier. Benefits include:

• Less direct stress on the underground poly fitting
• Easier height correction when turf thickens
• Easier straightening after soil settlement
• More flexibility when replacing one head style with another
• Reduced likelihood of a rigid nipple cracking from sideways force
• Improved access during future sprinkler repairs

Michigan soil movement and seasonal conditions

Michigan lawns experience freezing, thawing, wet spring soil, dry summer soil, turf growth, roots, and repeated lawn-equipment traffic. A flexible head connection is useful because the finished grade around a sprinkler does not remain perfectly unchanged forever.

Properly buried swing pipe is not normally damaged simply because winter temperatures arrive. The more common risks are puncture from aeration equipment, incorrect shallow installation, poor fittings, age, or physical damage during excavation.

Why commercial-grade components matter

A flexible connection is only dependable when the correct parts are used. Hunter HydroTech uses matching irrigation swing elbows and swing pipe instead of forcing incompatible products together.

We have encountered repairs where someone:

• Forced swing pipe onto a poly insert fitting
• Forced polyethylene pipe onto a swing-pipe fitting
• Used a hose clamp where the connection was not designed for one
• Used the wrong barb profile
• Cross-threaded the sprinkler head
• Installed the assembly too close to the surface

Poly pipe and swing pipe use different fitting profiles. A connection that appears tight during installation may still leak after the system is pressurized.

When a rigid connection may already be present

Many older systems contain heads installed directly on nipples or on older nylon male-threaded barbed fittings. The entire yard does not always need immediate reconstruction. However, when one of those heads is being replaced, Hunter HydroTech often recommends upgrading that connection to a swing assembly if excavation and pipe condition allow.

We prefer to place both spray heads and rotor heads on commercial-grade swing assemblies. This requires a little more material and care, but it gives us a better connection to stand behind and gives the homeowner a sprinkler head that is easier to maintain in the future.
