Sprinkler systems are intentionally buried, which makes them easy to forget until construction equipment crosses the same part of the yard. Fence posts, trenchers, pool excavation, patio work, sidewalks, concrete, utility projects, and landscape renovation can all damage irrigation infrastructure that is invisible from the surface.

1. Fence posts through polyethylene irrigation lines

Fence posts are commonly installed deep enough to cross residential sprinkler laterals. A post can puncture the line directly or crush it against surrounding soil.

2. Utility trenchers cutting several components at once

Fiber and utility trenches can travel a long distance through one side of a property. That single path may cross multiple laterals, station wires, common wires, or a valve box.

3. Pool construction removing complete irrigation zones

A pool project can destroy the original sprinkler design because the new pool and surrounding hardscape occupy areas that used to contain lawn, piping, wire, valves, and sprinkler heads.

4. Patio and concrete work changing coverage

Even when a cut pipe is reconnected, the old head positions may no longer make sense after a patio, walkway, driveway, or concrete pad changes the landscape. Coverage should be evaluated against the finished property.

5. Damaged sprinkler heads

Heavy equipment, excavators, loaders, concrete forms, grading, and trenching can break sprinkler bodies or remove heads completely. Grade changes can also leave surviving heads too low, too high, tilted, or buried.

6. Cut station wires and common wires

A sprinkler zone may have intact piping but still fail electrically because construction cut the wire to the valve. Common-wire damage can affect several zones at the same time.

7. Damaged valve boxes and manifolds

Valve boxes can be crushed, shifted, buried, or struck by construction equipment. If a manifold is damaged badly enough, rebuilding the complete valve-box arrangement may provide a cleaner repair than trying to preserve compromised fittings.

8. New hardscape creating new irrigation requirements

Construction can create narrow turf strips, new planting beds, isolated lawn areas, or drip-irrigation opportunities that did not exist before. A good reconstruction considers new rotor spacing, additional sprays, removed heads, dedicated drip zones, new valve locations, and new wiring paths.
